Antislavery Literature Project
The goal of the Antislavery Literature Project is to increase public access to a body of literature crucial to understanding African American experience, US and hemispheric histories of slavery, and early human rights philosophies. Antislavery literature encompasses slave narratives, lectures, travel accounts, political tracts, prose fiction, poetry, drama, religious and philosophical literature, compendia, journals, manifestoes, abolitionist music and children’s literature. There is a complex and contradictory range of voices, from journalistic reportage to sentimental poetry, from racial paternalism and stereotyping to advocacy of interracial equality, from religious disputation to militant antislavery calls.
The website often re-directs users to sites such as the Gutenberg Project where works can be downloaded or searched.

Documenting the American South
Includes sixteen thematic collections of primary sources for the study of southern history, literature, and culture. The works presented are not searchable but can be easily downloaded. The collections range from the colonial period to the 20th century. They include the exhaustive “North-American Slave Narratives” with an introduction by William L. Andrews.

The Center is worth exploring for many its resources but the Lewis and Clark journals (Moulton edition) are fully searchable, include a gallery of images, additional resources and the perspective of native Americans. A gem for researchers and use in the classroom!

Slavery and Abolition in the US: Select Publications of the 1800s is a digital collection of books and pamphlets that demonstrate the varying ideas and beliefs about slavery in the United States as expressed by Americans throughout the nineteenth century. The works in this collection reflect arguments on both sides of the slavery debate and include first person narratives, legal proceedings and decisions, anti-slavery tracts, religious sermons, and early secondary works.
The works can be searched and read online, not downloaded.
